Why PE and School Sport Matters to Me

Published on Oct 1, 2012
In 2010, Youth Sport Trust hired HU Media to run a filmmaking workshop with young people from five different schools and to produce a film around why PE and school sport matters to them.

The Best Part of Me

This past month the Art Department and Classroom Teachers collaborated on writing/art project.  The students were to identify the best part of themselves and write why they choose that particular part.  When the students attended Art, they then used the iPads, taking pictures of each others best parts.  I was truly amazed by this project and HIGHLY recommended to you to try this project.

All the Best Part of Me pieces are displayed throughout the school.  The photographs are beautiful.  The children have an 'eye' for capturing their peers best parts.

As a movement educator I fell in love with the composition piece of this project.  The children identified there Best Parts as necessary for movement, play, sports. and living.  Their writing is truly beautiful, detailed and it has depth.

We are born to move and the students understand this.  Their Best Parts enable them to enjoy life and provides them with challenges, enjoyment, and confidence today and in the future.

After reading their compositions I wondered..... WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF ME?

WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOU?

Tic Tac Toe Fitness

I love finding innovative ways to keep kids moving.  This week I am combining Tic Tac Toe Fitness and the Fitness Fortune Tellers to my lesson plans.  The students are working on goal setting through jump roping.  I have placed several "rest" stations around the gym to allow the students a break from jump rope skills.  I found the Fitness Fortune Tellers on a the HPE Merritt PE blog.  I love this blog.  Lots of great ideas.  My Tic Tac Toe Fitness boards came from Teachers Pay teachers.  They are designed by Cap'n Pete.  I must say I am not disappointed with my purchase.

SHAPE America

SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America is our National organization for health and physical education.  They have just announced their new board of directors.  I am proud to say one of the board members is a professor from Kent State University, Dr. Steve Mitchell.  I have known Dr. Mitchell since 1992.  Dr. Mitchell is one of many Kent State professors and instructors who have continuously supported not only physical education but me as well as a teacher in the public schools.  To learn more about Dr. Mitchell or the KSU Physical Education program follow the link.

Anchor Charts

Anchor charts help keep not only the students focused but me as well and are great to reference throughout the lesson.  I have several "I CAN" anchor charts in the gymnasium.  I like to use the I Can charts as part of my lesson closure.  Students discuss what they Can Do, how they Can improve and problem solve what may need to happen in the next lesson if they encountered challenges.

#Likeagirl

From the website:
For as long as I can remember, hearing someone do anything “like a girl” was generally an insult, so how do you think it feels when you are an adolescent girl? Pretty insulting, right?

Hear what others think it means to be LIKE A Girl.

Watch this amazing video of women and girls talk about  #LIKE A GIRL.

As Always says, “We’re kicking off an epic battle to make sure that girls everywhere keep their confidence throughout puberty and beyond, and making a start by showing them that doing it #LikeAGirl is an awesome thing.”
